External Wall Insulation Systems EWIS (Insulated Render & Cladding)
External Wall Insulation Systems “EWIS” or Insulated Render Cladding Systems (also sometimes referred to as Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems "EIFS" or External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems “ETICS”) combine the benefits of improving the aesthetic appearance of a building whilst at the same time reducing energy costs.
External Wall Insulation Systems were introduced into mainland Europe in the mid 1940’s and subsequently into Britain in the 1960’s. More recently, the Decent Homes Standards and Part ‘L’ of the Building Regulations have significantly increased insulation standards and the demand for more innovative solutions for thermally upgrading and renovating properties, including over insulation of solid wall properties, and consequent reduction of carbon emissions.
External wall insulation systems generally involve the mechanical and/or adhesive fixing of insulation boards (Rigid phenolic, rigid urethane, extruded polystyrene or mineral wool) to the outside of a building, which is then covered with a metal render carrier, or scrim coat render and glass fibre mesh reinforcement, and a base coat and final decorative finish.
External wall insulation systems are available with a choice of insulating material and render finishes, providing design and specification options across many building markets sectors including commercial, retail, education, leisure and residential markets.
