Lovell - Rapid Progress on Super-Green Social Housing, St Athan scheme

Council leaders have welcomed the rapid progress of a new ‘super green’ social housing development being built by Lovell in St Athan, South Wales.
The 16 properties are being built by Lovell for Wales & West Housing Association (WWHA) in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council. Anne Hinchey and Ivor Gittens, chief executive and chair of the Board of WWHA respectively, were joined by Gordon Kemp, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council and Lovell regional director Nick Kurobasa to witness some of the development’s last six metre-long walls being craned into position.
Cllr Kemp and Cllr Paul Church, the Vale’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, both welcomed the development’s rapid progression. Cllr Church said: “We’re very pleased with the way the work is being carried out and the speed in which the development is taking shape. The houses are already looking impressive and will provide good-sized accommodation.”
The energy-saving low carbon homes are due to be completed in February 2010 and will be made available for affordable rent from WWHA. “These properties are being built as part of a Welsh Assembly Government pilot scheme and will be more than 40% more energy efficient than most new homes,” said Anne Hinchey, chief executive of WWHA.
Lovell regional director Nick Kurobasa commented: “It is exciting to see this state-of-the-art green development taking shape as we work in partnership with WWHA and the Vale of Glamorgan Council to deliver these eco-friendly, energy-efficient homes.”
The new housing is being built using the WAVE Homes system, where walls and floors are built in factory conditions and then brought to site, with insulation and service ducts built in, ready to be assembled. The development will be among the first in Wales to achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
