H+H Aircrete - Fire Performance Critical
Supplier: H+H UK Ltd
Customer: Bouygues UK
Location: North Middlesex University Hospital
Summary of the Project

The fire performance of H+H aircrete was central to its specification for the redevelopment of North Middlesex University Hospital. 1700m2 of 200mm thick Celcon Hi-Strength Blocks and 170m2 of 100mm thick Celcon Hi-Strength Blocks are used in dividing internal walls on three levels starting at the lower ground floor. Situated between concrete columns separating the mortuary, plant, catering and cold rooms, the Celcon Hi-Strength Blocks are being installed by Bouygues UK.
H+H Celcon Hi-Strength Blocks are fire resistant for up to 6 hours (non-loadbearing 150mm), offer class 0 surface spread of flame and are non-combustible to Class A1, the highest class. This is especially important in buildings such as hospitals, as should fire break out, many people would be at risk if structural failure occurred.
Site engineer, Jaques Venter, commented,
“Aircrete is not something overly familiar to me, but having used it on this project I can safely say I am impressed with it as a building material and would be happy to use it again.”
Scheduled to open in 2010, the design, build, finance and maintenance of the facility are all under the Private Finance Initiative, (PFI) with the total construction cost coming in at £118 million.
