Health & Safety
The construction industry is responsible for more deaths than any other industry. Further, work-related ill health affects a significant number of construction workers, the sector has one of the highest rates of muscular skeletal disorder in industry.
Construction sites are dangerous and poorly managed sites with inadequate Workplace Risk Assessments being conducted (working at heights, using cement without proper facilities for washing, heavy loads being handled in an unsafe manner and vibrating tools being used when the user was unaware of the safe exposure period) are all too common practice in our industry. Not only is this dangerous for the workforce, your site team and the public, but it contributes to the negative image of our industry. A complete culture shift is required to raise expectations and to ensure that poor site safety conditions are not endured or condoned by anyone in the industry.
Building sites must be run professionally. Extra care needs to be taken to ensure that sites are secure and that materials and plant are stored safely. Everyone involved in construction projects including property developers must take proper precautions to protect the public, particularly children, when carrying out their work.
Health and Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times. If an accident occurs your site will be investigated and as the owner you will be liable to prosecution.
Experience shows that effective management of these risks can reduce or prevent injury and ill health to workers.
The MMC Centre aims to assist in reducing accidents and to promote safer working methods, equipment and practice on construction sites.
