Southwark Council progress fire safety work after the tragic fire at Lakanal House

Friday 16 October 2009

Southwark Council has published details of the progress that it has made in improving fire safety at Perronet House in Southwark, one of the three ‘scissor design’ blocks on which it was served enforcement notices by the London Fire Brigade in August following the tragic fire at Lakanal House.

The move is part of the borough’s commitment to share information with residents in a £4m works programme to improve fire safety.

A summary of the steps completed or underway include, completion of a fire risk assessment, introduction of preventative and protective measures, removal of all obstructions on balconies and corridors, a health and safety inspection process has been introduced to supplement regular 6 weekly inspections, overhauling and upgrading of the glazed metal doors to refuse chute rooms and communal balconies to provide appropriate fire and smoke resistance by way of positive action self closing devices, intumescent strips and cold smoke seals, and provision of suitable fire resisting door sets to the openings from flats to the common access corridors.

Glazed wooden doors to the staircase enclosures are also being overhauled and upgraded to provide appropriate fire and smoke resistance by way of positive action self closing devices, intumescent strips and cold smoke seals

Effective cavity barriers are being installed to appropriately subdivide the ceiling void and work is underway to check and seal any flaws or breaks in the compartment walls and floors caused by pipes or cables.

Although a recommendation, installation of hard wired smoke and heat detectors in tenants’ homes, in accordance with the appropriate part for a two level maisonette without a protected internal stair, is underway. This service has also been offered, at cost, to leaseholders at Perronet House.
