Summary of the Project

The Worcester University project was a £120million re-development of a derelict hospital site near the centre of Worcester. The main contractor was Costain, who this year has been awarded ‘Business Superbrands 2009’ for quality, reliability and distinction.
St John’s Campus had been the home of Worcester University for over 60 years but as the student population has grown, the University has had to expand with it. The development has now become a fusion of old and new with the demolition of the old ‘Worcester Royal Infirmary’ site which covers 5.29 acres.
This site has now become home to Worcester Business School, faculty of Arts and Humanities, a conference centre and a hotel housed in the historic hospital buildings.
The new development is linked to St John’s Campus (which itself has been upgraded with classrooms being modernized, new halls for 182 students and a £7 million extension to the allergy research unit) plus the public library and history centre accessed via a covered walkway beneath Worcester’s railway viaduct.
Costain appointed ECL Contracts to install the facades to the student accommodation blocks 2 and 3 at the site, and this has created 400 new bedrooms for the campus along with other Student Union facilities.
ECL installed the lightweight steel framing, cedar cladding and insulated render system.
