Design and build contractor Composite has completed construction of a precast concrete, two-storey car park at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, Mid-Glamorgan.

The car park, which will be used by hospital staff, forms part of new facilities being built by BAM Construction Ltd for the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABM) University Health Board. Reached by a new access road, the car park is part of a £23 million development at this important hospital and frees up existing surface car parks for use by patients and visitors.

Composite was responsible for the propped frame with external ramps, floors, screeds, asphalt waterproofing and three staircores. With a total area over two suspended levels of 10,410m², the car park provides 639 spaces.

Roy Nield-Dumper, Managing Director, Composite said: “We have been particularly busy in South Wales this year. In addition to Bridgend, we have just begun work with BAM Construction at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, on a second multi-storey car park for the same Health Board. Both projects are being delivered under the Welsh Health Estates, Designed4Life/Building for Wales Framework. In addition, we have just completed another multi-storey car park at St Catherine’s Walk retail and leisure centre in Carmarthen.

“Precast components for all our projects are manufactured off-site and delivered ‘just-in-time’, saving time and space. Components can be installed rapidly, producing little or no dust, noise or waste, while minimising traffic disturbance to surrounding areas – all of considerable benefit to a busy hospital, such as Bridgend.”
