Cogenco Ltd are pioneering a renewable energy system
Cogenco Limited has recently installed a 210kWe combined heat and power unit at the Greenfinch biowaste digester site in Ludlow, Shropshire.
The combined heat and power unit has been installed as part of a biogas plant, the first of its kind in the country. Biogas is made from waste products, at this biogas plant the waste products are obtained from domestic and garden waste, collected fortnightly from local households. Through the resulting process biogas is produced to power the 210kWe combined heat and power unit which in turn produces electricity and hot water.
In a controlled plant such as the biogas plant at Ludlow the anaerobic digestion process takes just 25 days compared to the normal process in a landfill site which takes 25 years, the biogas process provides an immense reduction in timescales for this process.
The advantage of this innovative system is the use of normal household waste, a totally renewable method of using waste and being able to recycle it to produce heat and power. The residue from this process is used; by way of plant fertiliser supplies to local farmers.
