BIG wins waf housing award
The annual World Architecture Festival (WAF) is currently taking place in Barcelona. The festival celebrates international architecture by awarding the best recent designs in different categories, including Culture, Housing and Sports. WAF received an overall number of 722 entries from 63 different countries from all around the world. BIG was nominated in the Housing category, presenting Copenhagen project, the Mountain Dwellings.
Festival participants have an extraordinary opportunity to observe all shortlisted entries presented to the jury, which is comprised of internationally acknowledged members among others Norman Foster and Robert Stern. BIG was announced the winner of the Housing category after Bjarke Ingels’ presentation.
Bjarke Ingels commented on the award:
“From the beginning, we have considered the Mountain Dwellings as our first realized example of what we call architectural alchemy. The idea is that by mixing traditional ingredients, like e.g. parking and housing, in a symbiosis an increase in value (if not gold) can be created. Housing projects are rarely brought out as world architecture. The fact that the Mountain Dwellings has now achieved this honorable status, can be seen as a symbol of a piece of architectural alchemy that works. Moreover, I am genuinely happy that our long and inspiring cooperation with Per Høpfner and Danish Oil Company is once again rewarded in the rest of the world.”
